Wireless technology

Wireless technology offers new possibilities for data transfer between readers and host devices in RFID applications. Wireless technology is an effective solution for applications where cabling would be too expensive or time-consuming. A wireless RFID solution can be installed quickly and effectively. An existing system can also be expanded with a wireless solution, which can lead to cost savings.

Idesco offers wireless solutions built with the wireless 6LowPan (IEEE 802.15.4) standard. This technique enables easy and cost-effective wireless data transfer between monitoring and controlling devices. The number of devices in the system is virtually unlimited. This makes this technology very suitable for RFID applications where many readers may be connected to the network. The power consumption of a system can be kept low because the devices in the system are activated only when they are sending or transferring data. 6LowPan (IEEE 802.15.4) standard uses a frequency of 2.4G Hz, which enables data transfer distance of up to a hundred meters, depending on the installation site and position. Idesco's wireless solutions provide the highest security level offered by 6LowPan (IEEE 802.15.4) standard, which enables the encryption of data transfer.

An example of a wireless RFID application is a camping area in which access by both people and vehicles is managed from Reception. Linking together a large number of readers scattered around the camping area and using ordinary cabling would be expensive and time-consuming. Instead, a wireless RFID solution can be installed quickly and practically without distance limitations. Readers connect automatically to one another and form a network, which is managed from Reception (see illustration). See also the April news 2010
