Technical Update 6/2010

Unique features of Idesco® EPC reader and Idesco’s robust
EPC Metal Tags

Idesco EPC reader owners and users might be interested to learn this reader comes with some unique capabilities.  For starters, the Idesco EPC reader’s default internal antenna is circularly polarized, enabling it to successfully interrogate tags in range regardless of those tag’s orientation relative to the reader.

This means your tag’s broad surface doesn’t need to face the reader in a specific orientation to be successfully read.  This ensures your tags will always be read when they come within range of the Idesco® EPC reader.

Furthermore, the Idesco® EPC reader is built with a wide range of configurability.  It accommodates Wiegand, RS232-485 and Ethernet IP67 and even wireless 6LowPan (when integrated into Cardea's network) allowing you to either customize your current reader’s communication with its controller – or even change your current controller.

Finally, affixing a tag on a metal surface usually presents read problems for many EPC readers.  This is why Idesco® also offers tags for installation on metal surface. These tags are designed to ensure a robust passive response to the Idesco® EPC reader and are hardened against harsh weather conditions and exposure to most chemicals.  Most importantly, however, they ensure successful EPC reader interrogations at distances up to 5 meters and, with certain environments and conditions, well beyond.  See illustrations below of one of Idesco® EPC reader’s reception patterns.

Idesco offers Legic Prime and Advant support for high security applications in Access 9 CL  readers

Idesco, as a high security identification solutions provider, offers readers compliant to one of the most secure RFID technologies, Legic Prime and Legic Advant. These readers are available in different housings for different applications and with pin support, if required.

Idesco® and LEGIC recommend you combine security mechanisms to guarantee your security against threat.  For example, Access 9 CL Pin users need only augment their protocol with a pin code to fully safeguard their system against compromise.  Access 9 CL users need only complement their protocol with biometric verification, CCTV monitoring or equivalent measures.

For Access 9 CL and 9 CL Pin users who are considering a higher level of security, upgrading to LEGIC’s Advant transponder technology will be met in stride by your Idesco® readers: they query Advant as readily as Prime transponders.

Access Touch 2.0

Idesco’s Access Touch RFID touch screen terminal recently completed an important update, to 2.0. This update, based on computer modules defined by the COM- express standard enables a greater range of form factors to be deployed to meet the customer’s needs.

Among new Access Touch 2.0 hardware properties and features arAT 2.0e a new LED backlight display with a resistive touch panel, battery backup for processed unit shut/down, two Wiegand RFID inputs, two RS232 RFID reader inputs, two relay outputs, two general purpose outputs, two general purpose inputs, optical tamper input, an RS485 option (requires your own or Idesco's RS485 protocol if deployed), optional twin speaker outputs on request and an optional and separate application controller, using Idesco’s proprietary reader and I/O handling protocol. (Description available on request from support@idesco.fi)

The Access Touch custom Linux operating system has also been updated. It possesses even higher security now in a streamlined read-only configuration. Furthermore, the OS boots more quickly, possessing a smaller OS footprint, can be configured for diskless operation via pxe Preboot environment and a Java runtime engine has been added.  Anti-viral software is now available on request and the system configures to a firewall easily. Of course, Windows XP Pro and Windows Embedded (development projects only) are still available on request.

Idesco’s robust IR 6040B IA deploys robust Microlog Technology to industrial environments

Idesco has a tradition of RFID engineering solutions to the most challenging problems.  Harsh industrial environments, far from being an exception to this rule, constitute one of Idesco’s oldest engineering strengths.  In the IR 6040B IA Idesco® deploys a variety of unique and innovative features, making this reader excel across a span of the most physically demanding environments.  For starters, Idesco uses low frequency Microlog ® technology in this reader which makes it reliable in even the harshest conditions.  It is engineered to interrogate flawlessly in temperatures as cold as -30° and as hot as +80° C.  Additionally, by sealing the reader in a polyacetal vandal-resistant epoxy-potted housing, the IR 6040B IA possesses additional protection from shock or exposure to many industrial chemicals.

Proven and ideal deployments for the IR 6040B IA include factories, steel plants, logistics centres or wherever RFID data collection presents challenges due to environmental conditions. Click to learn more.

Component Delivery Times

As you may be aware, Idesco has faced challenges to confirWalkingm and ship some of its orders.  Some of you may have experienced delays, changes in previously confirmed delivery times or partial shipments. These delays were due to worldwide shortages of components in the wake of recent improvements in the global technology business economy.  During the recession, component stocks and production capacity plummeted among many suppliers we buy from.  Recent improvements in business conditions globally have profoundly increased demand upon these same companies even as they struggle to increase their production capacity to meet it.

For nearly a year Idesco Oy has faced the daunting task of forecasting which of our supplier’s components will be in short supply 3-6 months from now.  We even encountered sporadic shortages in basic, off-the-shelf components such as LEDs and capacitors.

You should know that, for some time, Idesco Oy has been investing in component stock to extend our manufacturing outlook.  We have also been lobbying our suppliers to increase their component stocks even to the extent of negotiating capacity reservations for the most critical components we use. Crucially, we have already increased our SCM staff in order to protect against any future shortages.

We anticipate our present manufacturing bottleneck will resolve in a few weeks.  During this time you may experience longer lead times than normal; we ask for your understanding and patience while we work to fill your valued orders with us.  We also urge you to keep in contact with your Idesco Sales agent, whether you anticipate placing large or only small orders or merely in order to stay informed on the status of your existing orders.  Thank you for your understanding.

Best Regards,
Idesco Team
