Building information society by RFID - Flexible access to services by one smart card
Smart cards are used today for various businesses in everyday life; as library cards, travel cards, ID-cards for various identification applications, for banking, payments etc. You may also need a card to access your working place every morning. What if you could use one card for all applications where electronic identification is needed? RFID readers suitable for multi-applications make this possible and ease the user's everyday life. This is information society at its simplest!
The students and personnel of Finnish Tampere University of Technology use Idesco's readers for access control. The system enables personnel and students to come and go throughout the university around the clock, simultaneously ensuring that only authorized persons are in the premises. Thanks to Idesco's readers based on Mifare®technology, the use of multi-application cards is possible in the system. The reader is able to identify the same card which can be used as a key to other services elsewhere in the university or around the city area. Also other organisations and municipalities in Tampere area have applied Mifare®technology to their access control systems.
This is one example of applying and taking the advantage of RFID technology as a whole in everyday life. The same card can be used for many applications in the city area, for example as a travel card in the local public transportation, as a library card or for small payments. Taking into use an access control system of this kind is a result of eTampere development program, the goal of which is to build humanly sustainable knowledge society in the city of Tampere in Finland. The target of the project, begun in 2001, ending in 2005, is to create network services that ease citizen's daily lives and also to bring those services within reach of everyone, to strengthen the foundation of expertise in research and education and to create new innovative businesses. The programme is an extensive collaborate project to which the local educational and research institutes, businesses, organisations and communities contribute their own expertise and input.
Idesco's readers in the access control application of the university are based on Mifare®technology. Mifare®is the most common technology for contactless and dual interface smart card applications compliant with the ISO 14443A standard. Mifare®technology supports multiple applications in which the same tag can be used for several applications, like access control, ticketing and other payment applications. It also enables encryption of the data transfer. Mifare®is an ideal technology for use with fingerprint identification.
